The Third Sector plays an important role in the development of a sustainable society. The positive impact which non-profit organisations have on environmental protection, social inclusion and economic justice is immeasurable. There is however a need and a benefit from such organisations adopting a strategic approach to the inclusion of sustainable principles in their daily operations. Brite Green offers value driven, efficient and effective strategies and solutions to facilitate the transition to sustainable practices within non-profit organisations.

The Third Sector has enjoyed considerable growth over the last two decades (1) and now accounts for 2% of UK GDP (2) and employs 2.2% of the UK workforce (3). Growth has been matched with an increase in competitive pressures meaning that many non-profit organisations are now run with the efficiency of the private sector. In this respect many of the advantages of incorporating sustainability into core strategy are comparable to those of business, in particular the potential for cost savings, and we therefore invite you to read our business section.

Whilst they share many similarities the aims of the two sectors are fundamentally different, and as such some of the drivers for sustainability will differ between them. Organisations within the sector are often characterised by a strong central vision, which underpins the actions the organisation takes, and this vision is what funding bodies, staff and volunteers buy into. Brite Green believes that fully incorporating sustainability into your organisation can widen opportunities for partnerships and strengthen your proposition to funding bodies and the people around you, thereby enhancing the viability of your organisation.

People

Recruiting, motivating and retaining dedicated and capable volunteers and staff is a priority for successful non-profit organisations. There is a body of research to suggest that organisations which adopt sustainable values are more successful in these processes. Brite Green believes this is especially true in the third sector where many participants are conscious of broader social and environmental trends.

Funding

Securing adequate and stable funding is one of the key challenges for most non-profit organisations. Incorporating sustainability into your organisation will support your funding efforts in two ways:

  • Firstly, this process will help to differentiate your organisation and will enhance your value proposition to prospective funding bodies, many of which are now incorporating sustainable principles in their own operations (government, corporate sponsors and private donors). They are often being more selective in the current economic downturn.
  • Secondly, there are an increasing number of funding opportunities for the third sector to become more sustainable. Pursuing these will help reduce operational costs and allow more funding to be spent on enhancing the central vision.
